I was watching the figure skating and snow boarding on last night’s Olympics program. Since Canada is hosting, NBC has been adding tributes to Canada by sharing some of the the country’s positive attributes. What I saw was a feature story on Churchill, Manitoba , “The Polar Bear Capitol of the World”.
I was intrigued. I am very much a warm weather person and could never see myself wanting to visit a place that never gets very warm. But I found myself thinking it would make a great trip for a few days, even in the winter.
Churchill Manatoba is located on the Hudson Bay and is known for its ecotourism. Beluga whales can be seem the warm bay waters in July and August getting ready to calf. The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can be seen throughout the winter months. If you have ever seen the Northern Lights you know, they alone, are worth the trip. But the real prize are the polar bears seen near town as they migrate in October and November. (more…)
